FAQs - Is it hard to adopt a child?

View videos →

Adoption Agencies try to make the process of adoption as easy as possible for prospective adopters.  Training is provided and mandatory in order to adopt but it may be easier than you think.  There are many misconceptions as to why people cannot adopt a child in the UK.  It is recommended that before ruling yourself out, speak to a local adoption agency first.  This is either a Voluntary Adoption Agency (charity) or your Regional Adoption Collaborative (part of your local social services).  Legally you have to be over the age of 21.  You also need a spare bedroom for the child.  As part of the assessment process you will be subject to a DBS check, an adoption medical completed by your GP, and a number of other checks, e.g. Local Authority, employers (if applicable) and landlord (if applicable.)
