There are many misconceptions as to why people cannot adopt a child in the UK. It is recommended that before ruling yourself out, speak to a local adoption agency first. This is either a Voluntary Adoption Agency (charity) or your Regional Adoption Collaborative (part of your local social services). Legally you have to be over the age of 21. You also need a spare bedroom for the child. As part of the assessment process you will be subject to a DBS check, an adoption medical completed by your GP, and a number of other checks, e.g. Local Authority, employers (if applicable) and landlord (if applicable.)
